Hyde Park Removals Health and Safety Policy
Hyde Park Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transportation and unloading of goods.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property or the environment arising from our operations. We will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice within the removals sector. Safety is an integral part of planning and delivering every move, whether a small flat relocation or a complex office move.
Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to all staff, including management, office personnel, drivers, porters, packing teams, temporary workers, subcontractors and anyone engaged on behalf of Hyde Park Removals. It also applies to all premises, vehicles, equipment and work activities carried out while providing removal and related services.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that appropriate systems, resources and supervision are in place. Management will:
Plan work activities to minimise risk, provide and maintain safe vehicles, equipment and work environments, ensure suitable training and supervision, and regularly review performance.
Employees at all levels have a duty to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others, follow company procedures and safe systems of work, correctly use equipment and personal protective equipment supplied, and promptly report hazards, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Hyde Park Removals will carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with our activities, including manual handling, working in and around vehicles, operating lifting equipment, working at height when required, and access to properties in busy urban streets.
From these assessments we will develop clear safe systems of work and job-specific instructions. These will be communicated to all relevant staff before work begins. Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change in work practices, equipment or locations.
Training, Competence and Supervision
We recognise that competent staff are essential for safe and efficient removals. All new employees receive an induction covering company policies, safe lifting techniques, vehicle safety, emergency procedures and reporting requirements.
Ongoing training may include manual handling refreshers, safe use of removal equipment such as trolleys and lifts, load securing and stacking, vehicle checks and driving standards, handling fragile, bulky or high-value items, and awareness of working in built-up areas and shared spaces.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring work on site, ensuring procedures are followed and intervening if unsafe practices are observed.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core activity in removals and a major source of potential injury. Hyde Park Removals will, as far as reasonably practicable, avoid hazardous manual lifting by using appropriate equipment and planning moves to reduce carrying distances and awkward loads.
Where manual handling is necessary, employees must follow safe lifting techniques taught during training, work in teams for heavy or bulky items, use provided equipment such as dollies, sack trucks, straps and ramps, and stop work and seek guidance if an item is too heavy or awkward to move safely.
All equipment will be regularly inspected and maintained. Faulty equipment must be reported immediately and taken out of use.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are central to our services and must be operated safely at all times. We will ensure that vehicles are roadworthy, regularly inspected and maintained, and suitable for the loads carried.
Drivers must conduct pre-use checks, secure loads to prevent movement during transit, drive courteously and in compliance with road traffic laws, and take particular care when manoeuvring, parking and operating near pedestrians and other road users.
Working at Client Premises
When working in homes, offices or other client premises, our teams will protect clients, visitors and the public from risk by maintaining clear walkways and exit routes, using floor protection and corner guards where appropriate, controlling access to work areas as far as is practical, and communicating clearly with clients about any specific hazards or restrictions.
Staff must show respect for the property they are working in and immediately report any damage, incidents or safety concerns to their supervisor.
Housekeeping and Environmental Considerations
Good housekeeping reduces the likelihood of trips, falls and damage. Teams are required to keep work areas tidy, stack boxes safely, and promptly remove waste materials. We aim to minimise environmental impact by reducing unnecessary journeys and handling materials responsibly.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Staff will be briefed on emergency procedures relevant to their work, including fire safety, first aid arrangements and actions to take in the event of road traffic incidents or serious injuries.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Hyde Park Removals values the input of its workforce in improving safety. Employees are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions on safe working practices.
This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards or company operations. Copies of the current policy are available to all staff and to clients upon request.
By implementing this Health and Safety Policy, Hyde Park Removals aims to ensure that every move is carried out safely, efficiently and with due care for everyone involved.
